自然界での生物現象から真摯に学び、特異な生態系でくり広げられる生物現象を「生態系ダイナミズム」という視点で着目し、現象に関与する切れ味の良い有用天然有機分子の探索を試みた。また、新規化合物の単離・構造決定のみで満足することなく、化合物の展開利用までを視野に入れた姿勢で化学合成と生物学的意義の解明を目指した研究に取り組み、複数の重要化合物の発見及びその機能解明を達成した。本研究により、サンゴ幼生誘引物質や哺乳類毒の解明等これまで未解明であった現象に関与する物質を解明するとともに、関連科学分野への波及性を発揮する新規天然有機化合物の発見を導くことができ、生物分子科学の新領域を創成した。
