65歳以上の地域在住高齢者を対象とした本研究での有病率は、早期加齢黄斑変性症4.5%、晩期加齢黄斑変性症1.1%であった。血清抗酸化物質は、カロテン類、キサントフィル類、プロビタミンA類、カロテノイド類のいずれも統計学的に晩期加齢黄斑変性症と有意な関連を認め、個々の抗酸化物質単独の影響よりも複合的な影響が示唆された。一方、早期加齢黄斑変性症との明らかな関連を示す要因はなかった。
