眼窩壁骨折（吹抜け骨折）の重篤度に影響する因子としては、外力の強さ以外に ①外力の作用する方向 ②打撃を受ける眼窩周辺の部位 ③打撃を受ける顔面骨の形態的特徴といった要素が影響する。本実験においては、これらの因子と骨折の程度に関する相関につき有限要素シミュレーションを用いて定量的な解析を行った。この結果、①俯角より外力が作用すると広い範囲に骨折が生じやすいこと ②外力の眼窩の内圧上昇を介した間接的作用と、眼窩壁を経由した直接的作用には相補性が存在すること ③上顎骨に欠損を有する場合、広範囲に骨折が生じやすいことが解明された。これらの所見は吹抜け骨折の診断ならびに予防に有用である。
