CXCR3ノックアウトNODマウスでは、自然経過で早期において糖尿病発症が促進され、また、このマウスの脾細胞をNOD-scidマウスへ養子移入すると著しく激しい糖尿病をした。したがって、CXCR3陽性細胞分画に強力な免疫制御作用を有する細胞群が存在する可能性が示唆された。ケモカインレセプターCXCR3は、1型糖尿病の発症制御に極めて重要であることが明らかになった。
