IL-18制御が劇症肝不全治療に有用であるか否か検証するためにD-ガラクトサミン誘導性劇症肝不全ラットの肝臓にヒトIL-18拮抗物質（以下IL-18bp）遺伝子をadenovirus vectorを用いて導入し、肝障害の抑制効果をみた。しかし、肝障害抑制効果が不十分であったため、核内タンパクであるHigh mobility group box-1（HMGB-1）に着目し、同様の劇症肝不全モデルにおいて血清HMGB-1が上昇することおよび抗HMGB-1抗体投与によるHMGB-1制御によってその予後と病態が改善することを確認した。
