個体あたりの器官の「数」は動物の種類によって, そして器官の種類によって異なる. 器官の数の進化の背景となる要因・機構に関して, 昆虫類の雌雄生殖器・交尾器の形態を材料に, 事例集約と実験観察をおこなった. 特に詳細なデータが収集できた射精口の数の進化に関しては, 少なくとも昆虫の7目において進化的変化が生じていることが記録され, 分岐・退化・左右融合というこれまでに知られていた機構のほか, 機能自体が近接する器官間で転移する現象が発見された.
