組織工学的手法を用いて軟骨細胞を生体外または生体内で3次元的に再構築する軟骨の再生医療では, 非侵襲的な組織形成度の評価法の確立が必要不可欠である. 関節軟骨は質量の70－80%が水分から構成されるために, 組織内の水分子の制限拡散現象と軟骨の材料特性との間には密接な関係が存在すると考えられる. 軟骨内部の水分子は細胞膜や細胞外基質(コラーゲン, プロテオグリカン)によって運動が複雑に制限されるため複数の拡散成分を示す. 本研究課題では軟骨組織中の水分子の制限拡散現象に着目した, 再生軟骨のマイクロスケールでの組織構造評価法の開発を行った.
