急性の合併症の実験として、Wistar rat 6匹に、生理食塩水、及び、HGFを0.5μg、1μg、2μg、4μg、8μgを溶解した生理食塩水を尾静脈より投与し、1時間後に各ラットの両肺に放射線を15Gy 照射し、24時間後にラットを開胸し、肺を摘出した。アポーシスを解析では、HGF2μg、4μg投与群でアポーシス誘導の低減が認められた。HGF量の定量では4μg、8μg投与群で有意な上昇を認めた。慢性の合併症の実験として、Wistar rat 9匹を治療群と非治療群および対照群の3群に分け、治療群3匹には、HGFを生理食塩水に溶解して尾静脈より投与し、非治療群3匹には、生理食塩水のみを投与し、その1時間後に、右肺にのみ放射線を3Gy照射した。対照群3匹には生理食塩水の投与のみを行い、照射はしない。週に5日間連続して行い、3週間、合計45Gyの照射を行う。照射終了後10週後に開胸し、肺を摘出し固定した。治療群と非治療群で右肺に病理学的に炎症性細胞の増多と炎症性変化(一部繊維化)を認めた。しかしながらHGF投与群と非投与群で明らかな差異は認めなかった。照射線量を1回4Gｙに増量して、計60Gyとして同様の実験を行い10週後に同様に肺の摘出を行ったが、HGF投与群で非投与群に比較して、肺の繊維化が目立たない傾向も認められた。
