日本刀用可搬式デジタル画像撮像装置を開発し、鎌倉時代から江戸時代までの75 件の短刀と3件の太刀を撮像した。得られたデジタル画像には、従来の記録方法では困難であった、各流派および各時代を代表する日本刀地金の特色が細部に至るまで表示されていた。これまで、日本刀の鑑識家に独占されていた日本刀表面形態を一般に提示するうえできわめて有効な方法であり、当該方法による日本刀デジタル画像データベースの構築が可能であることが確かめられた。
