本研究では, ニホンザル胎児標本の骨格構造を, CTを用いて非破壊的に観察し, その3次元成長パターンを定量的に分析した. 具体的には, 頭蓋骨, 四肢骨のプロポーション, および踵骨の骨梁構造の成長変化の分析を行い, ニホンザル二亜種の間に認められている頭蓋の形態変異の発生機序など, ニホンザル骨格系の形態的特徴の形成メカニズムを明らにした. こうして得られたニホンザル胎児期の詳細な成長軌跡は, 霊長類骨格系の形作りのメカニズムを探る上で重要な基礎データとなる.
