細胞内Ca2+動態を担う分子群の一つであるイノシトール三リン酸受容体(IP3R)には3つのサブタイプ(1、2、3型)があり、いずれも心臓に発現している。これまで心臓発生におけるIP3Rの生理的意義は不明だったが、私たちは、1型2型IP3R ダブルノックアウト(DKO)マウスでは心内膜床と心筋の発生異常が、また1 型3 型IP3R DKOマウスでは右心室と心臓流出路の発生異常が起こることを明らかにした。1型2型IP3RはNFATc系に、1型3型IP3Rは二次心臓領域に関与する分子を制御することが示唆された。以上より、IP3-IP3R系が受容体サブタイプ特異的に細胞内Ca2+シグナルを調節し、遺伝的相補性をもって心臓発生を領域別に制御することが解明された。
