医学生理学的に非常に重要なABCトランスポータを駆動しているNBDエンジンの作動メカニズムについて研究して、その作動サイクル中の遷移状態のうちのひとつにおける4次構造変化を明らかにした。さらにNBDエンジンがATP分解エネルギー以外に、水の熱振動エネルギーを利用して作動している可能性を示した。また、単粒子解析によって水溶液中のCFTR分子の全体像を2nmの解像度で解くことに成功し、NBDエンジンの動作サイクルに伴う4次構造変化の観測の可能性を開いた。
