ヒト骨髄由来間葉系幹細胞の心筋誘導効率はきわめて低いことがこれまでの研究で明らかにされていた。我々は、ピオグリタゾンにより間葉系幹細胞の心筋誘導効率を著明に改善できることを証明した。また、ピオグリタゾン前処理した間葉系幹細胞をラットの心筋梗塞部位に移植することで心機能の改善と心筋梗塞範囲の縮小を確認した。今後、ピオグリタゾン前処理した間葉系幹細胞を用いての心筋再生医療の確立とさらなる発展が大いに期待される。
