SnailはE-cadherin発現を抑制し、matrix metalloproteinase(MMP)発現を誘導する上皮-間葉転換(EMT)の主要な転写因子である。原発性腎細胞癌97例を対象にSnailとE-cadherin発現を免疫組織学的に検討した。SnailはG3の腎細胞癌において高発現しており、G1・G2の腎細胞癌では発現が低く、Snail高発現・E-cadherin低発現例は再発率が高く、予後不良であった。腎細胞癌由来の細胞株786-OのSnail発現をsiRNAによって抑制した結果、E-cadherin発現の上昇とMMP9発現抑制を認め、浸潤能が低下した。Snailが腎細胞癌のEMTに重要な役割を果たしており、Snailの抑制が腎細胞癌の治療標的になる可能性が示唆された。
