最近の大規模臨床試験で、血圧調節が主たる役割である血管ホルモンが、メタボリックシンドローム発症に関与する可能性が明らかにされ注目されている。本研究において、代表的な血管ホルモンであるナトリウム利尿ペプチドやアンジオテンシンIIが、骨格筋のミトコンドリアを制御して、酸素消費を調節することが明らかになった。これらの知見は、血管ホルモンが循環調節ホルモンとして作用するのみならず、代謝調節ホルモンとして肥満, 糖尿病、メタボリックシンドロームの発症進展に関与することを示している。
