線維化における炎症性細胞、特に単球の役割を追究した。まず線維化疾患の代表的な線維化疾患である強皮症で単球について解析した。強皮症末梢血単球はversicanを高発現していた。versicanはMCP-1に結合し、単球の遊走を誘導したことから、versicanはMCP-1の貯蔵庫となり、局所への単球の浸潤を誘導することで、線維化に関与する可能性が考えられた。さらに単球の浸潤が先行する遺伝子改変マウスでその形質を調べた。遺伝子改変マウスでは先行する単球の浸潤ののちに線維化が生じている可能性が示唆された。以上より単球が線維化の機序に関与している可能性が考えられた。
