自己免疫性多腺性内分泌不全症I型(APS1, 別名APECED)は、AIRE(自己免疫調節遺伝子)の突然変異により発症する。申請者が樹立したAireを発現している細胞株を用いて、AIREのはたらきを探求し、自己免疫疾患のメカニズムの解明・治療法の確立を目指した。Aireを発現している細胞の状態により、Aireの発現量や、自己抗原となりうる様々な遺伝子、それを分解するプロテアソームの発現が変動している事を見いだした。
