転写因子HOXB9が上皮間質転換(EMT)を誘導することで、癌細胞それ自身の悪性度を高めると同時に、血管新生を通じて腫瘍微小環境を変化させることで、腫瘍増大や転移先における生着を促進していることが確認された。この効果にTGFβ経路の活性化の寄与が重要であることが示されると同時に、臨床検体病理学的にもHOXB9発現乳癌は悪性度が高く、予後が悪いことが示され、今後予後予測因子として有用である可能性が示唆された。
