毛包再生において、上皮と間葉の相互作用は重要である。マウス胎生期の真皮細胞は毛包誘導能を有していることが以前の実験で分かっているが、この性質は培養を行うと消失する。また真皮より分離され、培養中に凝集塊を形成する細胞(Skin derived precursors)も毛包誘導能を有している。このことから我々は、細胞が凝集塊を形成することが毛包再生と関わっているのではないかと考え、マウス皮膚・マウス肺・ヒト皮膚を用いてin vitroおよびin vivoでの検討を行ってきた。免疫不全マウスへの細胞移植実験(in vivo)では、非接着培養により凝集塊を形成した細胞と表皮細胞との混合移植で、毛包の再生を認めた。
