iPS細胞を用いた再生医療の実現のためには、様々な年齢及び遺伝的バックグラウンドを持つ患者から効率よくiPS細胞を樹立することが求められる。我々は成体マウス間葉系幹細胞(MSCs)を細胞源としてiPS細胞を作製したところ、すでに分化した骨前駆細胞(OP)や尾線維芽細胞(TTF)を用いた場合と比較して、高効率にES細胞と同等の性質を持つiPS細胞が樹立できた。以上のことから、成体組織であってもMSCsからiPS細胞を樹立すれば、質の良いiPS細胞を効率よく作製できることが示唆された。
