消化管の細菌感染症に対する免疫反応がどのように誘導されるかを検討した。胃炎を誘導するピロリ菌に特異的な免疫反応が、胃ではなく、小腸のパイエル板という組織で、樹状細胞という白血球に捉えられることで開始されることを明らかにした。また、消化管から体内に侵入して食中毒を起こすリステリア菌が、小腸のパイエル板から体内に侵入すること、その際にリステリア菌が持つインターナリンBと名付けられた侵入因子が重要であることを明らかにした。
