ヒト雌性生殖器官における幹細胞の生理的・病理的意義と役割を明らかにするとともに、幹細胞を標的にした疾患制御法の開発を目指すことが本研究の目的である。研究成果としては、子宮筋の幹細胞を分離・同定するための新しい方法を開発するとともに、妊娠子宮のリモデリングに子宮筋幹細胞が重要な役割を果たすことを明らかにした。一方、子宮内膜の幹細胞の分離・同定とその解析を通じて、内膜幹細胞が子宮内膜の再生に加えて子宮内膜疾患のひとつである子宮内膜症の発生に関与する証左を提示し得た。
