細胞内に存在するタンパク質のターンオーバー(タンパク質の合成レート及び分解レート、mRNAの翻訳効率)を網羅的に測定する手法を構築した。この手法で大腸菌細胞中の1500種以上のタンパク質のターンオーバーを解析したところ、5%程度の例外を除いて、ほとんどのタンパク質はきわめて安定なことが分かった。嫌気条件から好気条件のように代謝酵素のレベルが大きく変わる場合でも、不要な酵素が分解されることなく存在し続けており、環境に応じたプロテオームの構成変化は合成量の変化によって主に行われていた。
