平成20・21・22年度の3年度に渡り、ニューヨーク公共図書館スペンサーコレクションでの調査研究を行った。その際、反町茂雄氏『ニューヨーク公立図書館スペンサーコレクション蔵日本絵入本及絵本目録』(昭和53年、弘文荘刊、以下、「反町目録」と略称する)を使用し、それが刊行された時点での全貌を把握した上で、研究代表者と連携研究者の4人が、それぞれの専門分野の担当となり、実際の調査の中心となった。その分担は、石川透が物語・説話関係、佐々木孝浩が歌仙関係、寺澤行忠が和歌関係、佐藤道生が漢籍関係ということになった。反町目録に掲載されている作品数は相当数に及び、内容も様々である。それぞれの作品を4人の担当者で分け、下調べをした上で、スペンサーコレクションにおいて、調査・撮影を行うのである。この調査過程において、「反町目録」に掲載されていない収蔵品の存在も明らかになり、より多くの所蔵本を調査することができたのである。この研究の報告会としては、在米のコレクションについての報告会を兼ねた、奈良絵本・絵巻国際会議を、平成20年度にはワシントン・フリア美術館においてワシントン大会を、平成22年度にはニューヨーク・メトロポリタン美術館においてニューヨーク大会を開催した。本来ならば、ニューヨーク公共図書館で開催できればよかったのであるが、残念ながらニューヨーク公共図書館には、コレクションの内容を検討するスタッフが存在せず、最も近い施設でスタッフの存在するメトロポリタン美術館やフリア美術館を使用したのである。これらの集会については、別途紹介予定であるが、盛会の内に、有意義に終えることができた。
