19世紀前半の江戸で、最も発行点数・部数が多かった「草双紙(合巻)」の挿絵の第一人者となった浮世絵師「初代歌川国貞(三代豊国)」の合巻における業績を再考するために、彼が関わった合巻の調査を行なった。これをもとに、合巻における絵と文章の表現方法について明らかにし、単なる挿絵ではないことを指摘した。また国貞らに私家版浮世絵を発注していた大名の文芸活動について報告もし、江戸時代後期の文化形成のあり方を考察した。
