結晶には右手型と左手型の二種類の鏡像対称な形を持つものがある。溶液からこのような結晶を成長させると普通は左右同量できるけれど、磨り潰しながら結晶成長すると、一方の鏡像体結晶だけが生き残るという実験がある。本研究はこの現象を理論的に研究し、右左の鏡像体結晶粒が接近して成長表面を覆い、互いの成長を阻害することによって起きることを解明した。これは、有機分子の右手型と左手型を分離することにも役立ち、生命の右左非対称性の起源の理解に繋がるかもしれない。
