呼吸のリズムとパターンの形成に関与する頚髄呼吸神経細胞集団の機能と解剖を明らかにするため、ラットin vitro脳幹脊髄標本、in situ経動脈灌流標本を用い、膜電位イメージング、電気生理学的計測、組織学的分析を組み合わせた解析を行った。C1-C2の高位頚髄腹側部に新たな介在性呼吸神経細胞群を発見し、HCRGと命名して報告した。横隔神経核(C3-C5)レベルの呼吸神経活動の時空間的動態と解剖を詳細に解析し、同レベルには横隔膜と斜角筋を支配する運動神経細胞が分かれて、そして、異なる活動パターンで存在していることを明らかにした。本研究の成果は、頚髄損傷などによる呼吸障害について、病態理解と再生医学も含めた新しい治療法開発に貢献すると期待される。
