消化器癌細胞株あるいは臨床検体由来の細胞を用い、癌幹細胞分画を分離し、腫瘍形成能、コロニー形成能、薬剤耐性、転移形成能、浸潤能において、高い能力を有することを明らかにした。とくに、膵癌幹細胞の転移、浸潤、EMTは、間葉系幹細胞(mesenchymal stem cell, MSC)との共培養により強く誘導されることを見出した。癌根治のため、あるいは癌進展抑制のための治療戦略として、癌幹細胞あるいは間葉系細胞を標的とした治療の重要性が示唆された。
