高血圧は全人口の4人に1人以上が罹患している、最も有病率の高い疾患である。高血圧は通常は進行性・不可逆性の病態と考えられているが、本研究では高血圧の一部を正常域に引き戻すこと、すなわち退行(regression)をもたらすことを可能であることを高血圧モデル動物で示した。そのような高血圧の退行を惹起する方法として、レニンーアンジオテンシン系抑制薬の一つであるアンジオテンシン受容体拮抗薬を通常の10-50倍以上の高用量で一過性に投与する、「パルス」投与が有効であることを示し、その分子機序には腎臓の細動脈肥厚の退縮が関与していることが示された。
