母体低栄養ラットの腎サイズ、尿管芽分岐は胎生14日以降減少する。腎サイズは生後正常となるがネフロン数は減少している。母体低栄養腎において腎発生に重要なシグナル分子は胎生15日には抑制、胎生18日には活性化されていた。一方、アポトーシスの指標、活性型カスパーゼ3は両時期ともに母体低栄養腎で減少していた。カスパーゼ3阻害は尿管芽細胞の運動を抑制した。母体低栄養腎のネフロン数減少はカスパーゼ3を介する細胞運動の低下により尿管芽分岐が抑制されるためと推測される。
