我々は、高度侵襲後の過剰炎症反応、感染などへの高感受性と急性肺損傷(ALI)などの臓器不全発症、易感染性の原因として、生体内細胞環境の異常変動を疑い、細胞培養と動物実験系を用いて検討した。その結果、IL-18濃度低下に伴う多数の遺伝子変動、およびIL-18少量投与の新たな動物モデルにおける抗炎症効果を明らかにし、臨床応用の可能性を示した。さらにALIモデルで、IL-17欠損による炎症反応の増悪を見いだし、IL-17の新たな機能の可能性を示した。
