大小動物の劇症肝不全モデル、さらには患者検体における血液、肝組織中のHMGB1動態を明らかにし、HMGB1を制御するべく各種のストラテジーを開発することに成功した。すなわち、HMGB1中和抗体、HMGB1抑制タンパクの肝細胞への遺伝子導入、HMGB1吸着カラムなどである。これらを、劇症肝不全モデルを使用し、有用性を検討した。HMGB1抑制産生タンパクの遺伝子導入についてはラットモデルで、HMGB1吸着カラムについてはブタモデルで、病態改善の傾向を認めた。
