本研究においてスーパーオキシドジスムターゼ(Superoxide dismutase, SOD)1欠損高週齢マウスでは同週齢の野生型に比べて涙液量の減少及び眼表面障害が起きていた。また免疫組織学的検討により涙腺の炎症、線維化、酸化ストレスマーカー発現の上昇を認めた。これらの変化のメカニズムとして上皮間葉移行(Epthelial Mesenchymal Transition)の関与を示唆する結果が得られた。
