高度な知能・精神活動などを担う大脳新皮質を、哺乳類が進化において獲得した仕組みの一端を示した。すなわち、他の神経細胞の活動を抑制する働きをする「抑制性神経細胞」と呼ばれる細胞の移動能が、哺乳類で新皮質内に進入できるように変化したことが鍵を握ることを発見した。大脳新皮質の抑制性神経細胞は、統合失調症などの精神疾患と関連する可能性が近年注目されており、ヒトが高度な脳機能を獲得した仕組みの解明につながる可能性がある。
