無脊椎動物において、個体発生の視点から幼生、成体の自然免疫系を比較解析する研究はなされていない。本研究において、イトマキヒトデの免疫細胞の同種異個体認識能力は、幼生から成体への変態後に獲得されることを明らかにした。幼生及び成体の免疫細胞で発現する遺伝子を比較解析したところ、免疫関連遺伝子の大部分が両細胞種で共通である一方で、これら共通遺伝子の中に認識システムの変化を示唆する遺伝子が存在することを発見した。
