近年の二酸化炭素排出量の増大により, 地球温暖化や海水の酸性化など環境問題が深刻となっている. 本研究では水, 養分などの供給インフラ網を必要とせず, 植物系生物の光合成機能を活用した二酸化炭素固定・酸素供給デバイスの開発を目的として基盤技術の開発を行った. 具体的には光合成機能に優れた緑藻類細胞に着目し, 二酸化炭素固定・酸素供給デバイスの根幹となる藻類細胞の三次元的集積化技術を確立した. 藻類細胞を三次元集積することによって酸素生成速度が通常の懸濁培養と比較して2～4倍程度上昇する結果が得られた. また, 循環培養系を構築することで光合成による二酸化炭素の固定と酸素生成を6時間にわたり連続的に持続することが可能となった.
