本研究は, 機能的磁気共鳴画像(fMRI)を用いて, 「美しさ」の価値表象の発現に関与する脳の働きについて, 特に眼窩前頭皮質や側座核といった報酬系メカニズムとの関わりで検討した。絵画画像や顔画像, 商品画像などの様々な視覚刺激をMRI 内にいる実験参加者に提示し, それらに対する美しさの度合いの評定や, 対提示される2つの画像のうちどちらがより美しいかを問う判断をしている時の脳の活動から, 報酬系メカニズムの部位の詳細と判断や反応との対応関係を明らかにすることができた。
