脊索動物の形態形成過程を細胞レベルで理解するために、本研究では、個体を構成する細胞数が少なくシンプルな体制をもつホヤを用いて個体まるごとの1細胞レベルイメージングを行った。ホヤ幼生ひのう部における新規末梢神経ネットワーク構造の3Dイメージングや尾芽胚の3Dコンピュータモデル化、および神経管閉鎖過程の3Dライブ(4D)イメージングを行い、ホヤ胚発生におけるさまざまな形態形成過程を細胞レベルで明らかにすることができた。
