ドナー家族16名を対象に面接調査を実施し、質的帰納的分析を行なった。結果、ドナー家族にとって臓器提供は、『その人らしい生き方を支え、自分も支え続けられる』体験であることがわかった。ドナー家族は、突然の家族瀕死の宣告を受け、奇跡を願うが、好転しない病状から徐々に家族の置かれている状況を理解し始める。医師より臓器提供の意思確認を受けるか、ドナーカードの存在を知ることによって、重篤な状態の家族への看病を行ないながら、生前の意思を思い図り、自分と家族への問いかけを行なう。ドナー家族は、家族の遺志を叶える、誰かの中で生きることへの願望、困っている誰かの助けになるならなどの理由により、限られた時間の中で重大な決断をしていた。提供後の臓器提供の思いは、医療者の対応や、別れの時間の過ごし方、レシピエントの情報、周囲の反応によって影響を受けていた。
