本研究は、D-セリン調節の中枢神経系における生理的意義、および調節異常がヒト疾患に与える影響を明らかにすることを目的としている。生理的意義として、(1)D-セリン分解が脊髄では運動神経入力繊維に沿って行われていることを明らかにした。病態生理として、(2)神経変性疾患の一つ筋萎縮性側索硬化症においてD-セリンの分解異常がD-セリン上昇を来たし運動神経変性を起こすこと、(3)1型糖尿病モデルにおいてインスリン依存的な海馬D-セリン調節異常を来すこと、を明らかにした。
