ABCトランスポータ・CFTRチャネルのATP依存性ゲーティングの動態を詳解することにより、ATP結合ドメインにおけるATP加水分解の可否を決定づけている新規の中間状態の存在を明らかにし、さらに加水分解されるATP分子数と外に対して行う仕事量が1動作サイクルごとに変化している可能性を示した。この結果はATPの加水分解が、エネルギー源ではなくスイッチとして働いている可能性を示唆している。
