本研究は、臨床検体を用い、喉頭癌に特徴的に発現し、様々なしくみで遺伝子発現をコントロールしているマイクロRNAを複数(miRNAs)見出した。さらにはこれらのmiRNAsのうち、癌組織で上昇傾向を示したものに対してはその作用を阻害する遺伝子を、減少傾向を示したものに関してはその作用を模倣する遺伝子を頭頸部の癌細胞に導入し、その細胞増殖を抑制する効果を確認した。さらに、動物モデルを用い、同様の治療で癌の増殖ならびに転移の抑制が可能であることを突き止めた。結果として、疾患に特徴的なmiRNAsが、頭頸部癌の診断・治療標的として有用である可能性を示唆することができた。
