本研究では, 図書館経営理論の構築手法の確立とそれに基づいた図書館経営理論の構築をおこなった。具体的には, 1)既存の経営理論の図書館への適用事例を分析し, 図書館経営における理論上の課題と図書館経営の固有の特徴を明らかにした。また同時に, 2)既存の経営理論の特徴と構築方法も分析した。そして, これらの分析結果を基礎に3)図書館経営に適した理論構築手法を確立した。次にこの手法に基づいて4)日本と米国における16の図書館を対象に資料調査とインタビュー調査を行い, その結果を分析することで「図書館における経営戦略と組織理論」を提示した。
