海水とゲスト物質流体相とから成る液・液,あるいは気・液系におけるクラスレートハイドレートの生成と結晶成長を視覚的に観測して, その結晶形態(結晶モルフォロジー)と結晶成長速度とを明らかにした. ハイドレートの生成・分解を活用した海水淡水化やハイドレートを用いる天然ガス輸送・貯蔵技術の開発への貢献を意図して, シクロペンタン, メタン, エタン, プロパン等の炭化水素系ガスをゲスト物質として用いた. 観測実験結果と結晶成長の駆動力の関係を整理する解析から海水中の塩がハイドレート生成系における核生成と結晶成長とに及ぼす影響を明らかにした.
