リポカリン型プロスタグランジンD合成酵素(L-PGDS)は、脳で発見され睡眠調節に関係するプロスタグランジンD2(PGD2)を合成する分子として報告された。近年、L-PGDS-PGD2経路は、虚血性心疾患、動脈硬化、慢性腎臓病、メタボリック症候群の病態を修飾するメディエーターとして注目を集めている。本研究では、L-PGDSによって合成されたPGD2が、免疫応答の調節を介して、腎臓線維化に関与していること、心筋細胞に対しては、erythroid-derived 2-like 2 (Nrf2)と呼ばれるストレス応答分子の活性化を介して細胞死から守る方向に作用する事を明らかにした。
