本研究の目的は、英語学習者の学習環境の違いがストーリー構成に及ぼす影響を包括的に捉えることである。ESL/EFL学習者が英語話者との会話の中でストーリーテリングを行ったところ、トピック言及の指標である冠詞や代名詞については学習環境に拘わらず不適切な使用が見られた一方、EFL学習者が独話調であったのに対し、ESL学習者は談話標識等を駆使し、対話者と協働的にストーリー展開を試みる等、異なる傾向が表出された。本研究により、外国語教育における語用論的知識の教授の必要性が示唆され、母語にない言語形式は、ESL環境での肯定的証拠の豊富さにも拘わらず、誤用として定着するという言語転移の特質も明らかになった。 The study investigated the effect of learning environment on L2 story telling processes. High intermediate level EFL and ESL learners whose L1 is Japanese narrated stories within conversation with English native speakers. The results revealed that 1) irrespective of learning environment, inappropriate use of articles and pronouns were found in learner narratives, and 2) EFL and ESL learners displayed differing patterns in telling stories. Specifically, the EFL learners tended to tell monologic narratives, whereas the ESL learners were inclined to involve their native speaker interlocutors using discourse markers such as 'you know' and 'okay'. The research demonstrated persistent difficulty with the use of linguistic forms that do not exist in learners' L1 system despite abundant positive evidence ESL environment provides. Moreover, the study implied the importance of providing pedagogical intervention to teach pragmatics such as discourse markers and interactional strategies.
