本研究は, 国内の洞穴遺跡・岩陰遺跡を研究対象とし, その詳細な立地と周辺の自然環境, 洞穴の形状やその形成過程などを客観的なデータとして把握した上で, 特に旧石器時代から縄文時代早期までの洞穴利用のあり方を明らかにすることを目的とする。本州最北端の青森県から九州最南端の鹿児島県までの73ヶ所の洞窟・岩陰遺跡の現地調査を行った結果, 旧石器時代から縄文時代早期にかけて, その立地が高標高・広面積に拡大すること, またすべての時代において南側開口洞窟の利用が顕著であるが, 時代を経るにつれて北側開口洞窟の利用も増えることなどが判明した。 The purpose of this study is to examine the cave utilization of the latter Pleistocene in Japan. As a result of field work in 73 cave site from the northernmost Aomori prefecture of Honshu island to the southernmost Kagoshima prefecture of Kyushu , the following conclusion is reached. (1) From the Late Pleistocene to Holocene, altitudes of the caves used by prehistoric man became of higher and its square measure became larger. (2) In all period, caves opened in the south direction was used. Nevertheless period became new, caves opened in the north direction comes to be gradually used too.
