マウスの発生期大脳新皮質内で, 人為的に特定の遺伝子を強制発現することにより, 抑制性神経細胞を多く作らせることに成功した。また, 大脳新皮質の第2-3層の神経細胞と第4層の神経細胞に関して, 二種の転写因子Brn1/2とRorbが相互抑制しており, 前者が優位になると2-3層神経細胞に, 後者が優位になると4層神経細胞に分化することを見出した。すなわち, この両者を使い分けることによって, 未成熟神経細胞からの分化方向を人為的に変換できることを発見した。 In this study, we found that overexpression of a certain gene could modify the neuronal identity in the developing cerebral neocortex. In the upper cortical plate neurons, a mutually repressive mechanism exists between two kinds of transcription factors, Brn2 and Rorb, and the established expression of Brn1/2 and Rorb specifies those neurons into layer 2-3 and layer 4, respectively, during cortical plate maturation.
