心臓は全身へ血液を送り出すポンプとして働く。脳を初めとする全身の器官へ酸素を供給する重要な役割を果たすことから, 一度もその動きを止めることなく常に働き続けることが求められる。ポンプ機能は, 心臓を構成する心筋細胞の収縮により生み出され, 個々の心筋細胞が生み出す収縮力が集まることで, 全身へ血液を送り出すポンプとしての大きな力が生まれる。心筋細胞の細胞膜には, さまざまなイオンを電気化学的勾配に従い, 選択的に透過させるイオンチャネルや能動的に通過させる輸送体があり, それぞれのイオンチャネルと輸送体がイオンを細胞膜の内外で移動させ, 膜電位を形成している。心臓は, 発生過程の進行とともにその形を変化させる一方で, 常に興奮収縮連関機構を維持し続ける必要がある。本研究では, その発生過程から成体, 老化状態において変化する心筋細胞が具体的にどのように収縮を行い, どのような影響を与えているのかをコンピュータシミュレーションを用いて網羅的に解析をした。
