Evaluation of health impact of transboundary air pollution by an intensive observation of the concentrations of aerosol surface area and chemical constituents

微小粒子が生体に吸入される際に, その微小粒子の表面積が大きいほど生体有害性が強くなることが指摘されている。しかしながら, 一般環境大気中を浮遊する微小粒子であるエアロゾルの表面積濃度の観測例は極めて少ない。そこで本研究では, アジア大陸から地理的に近い長崎県五島市福江島において, 環境大気中エアロゾル粒子の表面積濃度とエアロゾル化学成分, および粒径分布の連続測定を行った。観測地点は, 国立環境研究所が管掌している福江島大気環境観測施設(長崎県五島市)とし, 観測期間は2017/4/10～30とした。拡散荷電法による表面積計にはNSAM(TSI, Model 3550), 元素状炭素(BC)濃度はAethalometer (microAeth, Model AE51, AethLabs), 化学成分はエアロゾル質量分析計(Aerodyne, AMS), 粒径分布はSMPS(TSI, Model 3081)を用いてそれぞれ測定した。その結果, 福江島におけるエアロゾル化学成分濃度はそれぞれに似た挙動を示し, これらが増加した際には表面積濃度も共に増加する傾向が見られた。しかし, 時々硫酸イオン濃度が単独で増加する場合があった。4/15, 16, 25は特に硫酸イオン濃度のみが増加し, 化学成分濃度中に占める割合は50%を超えていた。このとき, 後方流跡線解析による福江島における日ごとの気塊の流入経路の割合は南西方向からが占めていた。福江島において東シナ海から気塊が流入した時に硫酸イオン濃度のみが増加したが, これは表面積濃度を増加させなかった。このような日はエアロゾル表面積濃度とBC濃度の傾きが小さく, BC濃度に対して表面積濃度が小さくなっていたことから, 東シナ海から流入した比較的高濃度の硫酸イオンは, BCなどの他の粒子表面をコーティングし, 粒子の質量あたりの表面積を小さくしていた可能性があると考えられた。
The surface area measurement is important to understand the aerosol toxicity because an increased surface area may be able to act as an enhanced reaction interface for certain reactions between aerosol particles and biological cells, as well as an extended surface for adsorbing and carrying co-pollutants that are originally in gas phase. However, number of studies that investigated the surface area of ambient aerosol particles was quite limited. Continuous measurement of the surface area concentration, aerosol chemical composition and particle size distribution of ambient aerosol particles in Fukue Island, Nagasaki, which is geographically closed to the Asian continent, was carried out from 10th to 30th, April 2017. The surface area concentration was automatically and continuously measured using an Nanoparticle Surface Area Monitor (NSAM, Model 3550, TSI), black carbon (BC) was measured using an aethalometer (microAeth, Model AE51, AethLabs), chemical composition was measured using an aerosol mass spectrometer (Aerodyne, AMS), and particle size distribution was measured using a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS, Model 3081, TSI). As a result, the aerosol chemical component concentrations in Fukue behaved similar to each other, and when these increased, the surface area concentration also tended to be increased. However, the sulfate concentration sometimes increased alone. In particular, only sulfate ion concentration increased in 4/15, 16, and 25, and the proportion of sulfate accounted more than 50% for the total chemical component concentration. At this time, the inflow air trajectory on Fukue Island was mainly from the southwest direction. Although only the sulfate concentration increased when the air masses came from the East China Sea to Fukue Island, this did not increase the surface area concentration. On these days, the slope of regression line between the aerosol surface area and BC tended to be small. This means that the sulfates coming from East China Sea coated other particles like BC, and would let the particle specific surface area be small.
